Very useful information! I wonder if these equivalents can work on windows.
Jackie…..I do know GIMP and open office can be used on windows I’m sure there might be a few others.
I would suggest under mp3 taggers, you add musicbrainz picard tagger
It fingerprints the song and matches it to a database of similar fingerprints online to tag the song.
Great list, thanks for sharing! =) I just wanted to let you know that Picasa works flawlessly under WINE on my 64bit Ubuntu 7.10 machine, so I didn’t have to find a replacement for it. Hehe.
Hi All!
jackie, I’m sure that some of them can…
I’ve got your idea about word equivalent and sumbol < =>
Das Clown, thanks!
chris, musicbrainz rocks!
Brian, you might be interested in Picasa for Linux, download it here..
Here’s another good list.

For those used to Photoshop, the Gimpshop plugin for Gimp (http://www.gimpshop.com/download.shtml) mimics the feel of photoshop, making the transition from PS to Gimp much easier.
This is a great list! I’ve been looking for some Windows alternatives since making the jump to Linux a few months back, and this list gives me some options to complete the migration
you might want to remove Picasa from the list… or at least add it on the linux side as well.
AutoCad qcad perhaps?
Alternatiiva para ACDSee faltó GTKSee: http://gtksee.berlios.de
“GTK See is a simple image viewer based on GTK+ 1.2.x and running on X Window System. The appearance and interface are similar to popular image viewer ACDSee, that is where the name “GTK See” come from.”
Plus:
ACDSee -> gthumb
CDex -> serpentine
Google Desktop Search -> Tracker
Windows Media Player -> Totem
But there are dozens of programs more to mention, like Muine, Beep Media player, Gossip, Banshee, empathy, goobox, hipo, mcatalog, … and much more.
And some alternative for windows’ Briefcase?
Thank you.
And any alternative for windows’ Briefcase?
Thank you.
Funny about Picasa. Even though I’m running 2.2 under WINE, it still says Picasa for Linux on the about page.
Great thanks to everybody! List is upgraded now. Any changes or advices are still welcome!

cool men ..
Its great to have a equivalent Windows-Linux list of programs ..
My problem in Linux is Im not know the name of programs that I want .. until now . COOL!
thx again ..
PD: Im not speak english, zorry about horrible speling =S
ACDsee ? pornview
soundforge ? audacity
vegas (sound), cubase ? ardour (though basic approach to sound editing and producing is a it different between the platforms so it is better to give groups of programs)
Unfortunately, I cannot find replacements for vegas (video editing) or premiere. Cinerrela is just not ripe yet. Haven’t tried jahshaka, though.
For image viewing I use gwenview mostly, although there are plenty of different image viewers for linux.
For video editing perhaps kino or pitivi.
I’ve used kino a few times and the results are pretty good. I also have pitivi installed but I don’t recall ever having used it
Just went back and checked out pitivi.. I can’t even get it to import most of the clips I have here, which would be the main reason I never used it. And I can’t figure out how to do transitions, or trim clips, or anything at all really. The wiki documentation keeps telling me to click buttons and menu options that I simply don’t have on my screen.
Suggestion: drop pitivi off the list, replace it with kino.
yes good
nice to see lists like this… i was a die hard windows user…compiz blew me away and makes vista look like donkey crap. I want to migrate to linux but need some confidence in the software available. Lists like this are just whats needed: a flash linux prg, I hope so
Thanks….. your time was well spent now if you have a COD 4 linux prg I am sold

ACDSee Mirage
sorry, that would be:
ACDSee - Mirage
Hi. Thanks for this great information and the best it’s that it’s free.
I think linux in two year more it will be more popular than apple. and maybe ten to be in the 50 percent of the computers in the world.
There is a Linux Adobe Acrobat Reader now.
NOTICE how there’s almost always ONE SINGLE defacto standard for Windows… for each major type of software…?
Is there any way we could figure out which ONE is the “best of breed” for the Ubuntu alternative software…?
Maybe highlight it in RED…?

Great list! Makes my switching to Ubuntu a lot easier.
On another note regarding Bruce Wagner’s comment: I think that when you spend a couple of hundred dollars on a peace of software, one might not be too inclined to make another purchase for software that is similiar. However, most Linux apps are free. This makes it easier to experiment with apps that on the surface “do the same thing”. In turn one can see the differences in apps and how how is better, faster or easier at a particular task over one another.
I speak from expirience because when i spent my money on frontpage 2003 i was not interested in how things where done in dreamweaver. Frontpage could do (at that time) everything Dreamweaver could. was dreamweaver better? I see now that it could’ve been. But i had already spent my money and did not want to throw that out and then go spend more.

Wow. That is another — and a very insightful, new, and excellent — argument for free open source software.
sure wish that the linux / ubuntu world would look at the software for amateur radio operators and work on ubuntu versions. we have to run VMware now as all of out logging and contest software is windows based. and VISTA is killing us.
more of us everyday are looking to switch OS from windows to ubuntu OS
Thanks
Tony
Limewire works in Linux too…
This list is just a ripoff of linuxalt.com
thanx a lot
to everyone
makes Engineering softwares cheaper
these softwares do make windows look”CRAP”
after all WIN VISTA turned out bad
unfortunately, all the files aren’t compatible wid windows version
is there any solution to that
What do I do about most other things like wavepad to record songs I hear online, mp3gain to increase the volume of songs I record, games by Blizzard entertainment and such. Is there no way to create a Windows “shell” of the sorts that provides a similar environment that windows programs will accept. Everyone talks about escaping windows but we all need the stuff that windows works. No one sells Linux compatable software. Well at least every single program I use has nothing to do with Linux.
What do I do about that? Is there another OS better than windows and not Linux that will run my stuff? I mean it’s not like I still have the crummy auto windows update service. It’s been disabled for months now. But I use NOD32, skype, devcpp, jdk commander, context and more. It doesn’t seem one escapes windows unless they abandon windows compatibility first.
You can use vlc to record things online. Or mplayer, but that’s a little more fiddly. Those will dump the web stream directly to file so you can be recording and still do other things that make sound without interfering with your recording. Also arecord will record the output of your soundcard if you want to listen to the stream and record it at the same time.
programs such as normalize-audio or mp3gain (It’s open source so there’s a Linux version too!) can automatically set audio files to the same average volume level. You don’t need windows for that.
For the games, you might find virtualbox-ose acceptable. It creates a ‘virtual machine’ that you can install Windows onto, complete with a virtual network, sound and video card. I use it for testing websites but I think the 3d support is fairly good so you could probably play games in it.
You might also like to try the most recent version of WINE.
Another option; take a look at some of the quite good native Linux games that already exist; Urban Terror, Nexuiz, OpenArena, Glest, Wesnoth, sauerbraten, World of Padman, Teeworlds, frets on fire, stepmania.. these are a few that my kids play and none of them cost a thing.
