What do I do about most other things like wavepad to record songs I hear online, mp3gain to increase the volume of songs I record, games by Blizzard entertainment and such. Is there no way to create a Windows "shell" of the sorts that provides a similar environment that windows programs will accept. Everyone talks about escaping windows but we all need the stuff that windows works. No one sells Linux compatable software. Well at least every single program I use has nothing to do with Linux.

What do I do about that? Is there another OS better than windows and not Linux that will run my stuff? I mean it's not like I still have the crummy auto windows update service. It's been disabled for months now. But I use NOD32, skype, devcpp, jdk commander, context and more. It doesn't seem one escapes windows unless they abandon windows compatibility first.

You can use vlc to record things online. Or mplayer, but that's a little more fiddly. Those will dump the web stream directly to file so you can be recording and still do other things that make sound without interfering with your recording. Also arecord will record the output of your soundcard if you want to listen to the stream and record it at the same time.

programs such as normalize-audio or mp3gain (It's open source so there's a Linux version too!) can automatically set audio files to the same average volume level. You don't need windows for that.

For the games, you might find virtualbox-ose acceptable. It creates a 'virtual machine' that you can install Windows onto, complete with a virtual network, sound and video card. I use it for testing websites but I think the 3d support is fairly good so you could probably play games in it.

You might also like to try the most recent version of WINE.

Another option; take a look at some of the quite good native Linux games that already exist; Urban Terror, Nexuiz, OpenArena, Glest, Wesnoth, sauerbraten, World of Padman, Teeworlds, frets on fire, stepmania.. these are a few that my kids play and none of them cost a thing.

This list looks to be somewhat behind the times. I'm surprised that as an alternative for itunes, songbird is not listed which is probably the most used alternative for itunes today. As for a replacement for Microsoft Internet Explorer, many are using google chrome or chromium today. Looks like someone needs to go over this list and bring it up to date.

That was a interesting read|. Your insights were very educational and made me reconsider the recent developments in these areas. If only more writers are as conscious and as passionate about educating the population relating to these issues as you, we aspiring journalists wouldn't get such a bad rep. Appreciate expressing yourself so articulately. You made my day.
